Happy birthday my Love! Oooooh boy, do I love celebrating you! It has been so fun to take time this weekend to give thanks for the incredible man you are!
I know you don’t know, or at least don’t believe how amazing you are. That’s part of what makes you so amazing. As I think over all that you’ve accomplished in 30 years, I think that an outsider could see all the same things and feel a little bit intimidated. You’ve done so well in your career, you’ve got a house, kids, an absolutely incredible wife (right?!), not to mention you hold the respect and high esteem of everyone who knows you. But beyond all of that, the most amazing part of your character is that while your resume may be a little intimidating, you would never for a moment lord it over anyone. Undergirding all your accomplishments and accolades is a kind, humble heart that makes anyone comfortable in your presence – especially the kids and me.
I really believe with all my heart that you’re the best husband and daddy in the world. The impact you have on each of us through the ordinary rhythms of our daily life is really astounding. It never ceases to amaze me how you can take big, complex and complicated matters and turn them into casual dinner conversation for us all to understand and enjoy. You’re constantly going out of your way to lay down your own desires so each of us can feel loved and cared for. You’re intentional to praise and encourage each of the kids (and me!). And when my knee-jerk reaction is to overlook a job well done or seemingly unnecessary tears, you always find a way to get down on their level, enter into their world for a minute, and weep or rejoice with them. You really do encapsulate a Christ-like character and it’s such a blessing to get to learn from you.
I know I could go on for pages and pages about how proud I am to be your wife. I’ve often thought I should make you a t-shirt or plaque that says, “Nathaniel Smart: making all other husbands look bad since 2007”…but I’m not sure how well that would go over with…well, anyone! Even you! Because you would never want to make anyone look bad! But in all seriousness, you really are in a league all your own. You’re strong and tender, wise and kind, full of grace and knowledge and joy and I’m humbled every day that I get to be the one to walk through this life by your side.
I love you Nate, and I’m so glad to get to celebrate you this weekend – axe throwing, #escaping, eating entirely too much good food, and lots and lots of snuggling. You’re my favorite.
